Prospective associations between vitamin D and depression in middle-aged adults: findings from the UK Biobank cohort

Amy Ronaldson et al.

Summary: This study suggests that both vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency may be risk factors for the development of new-onset depression in middle-aged adults. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency (and to a lesser extent insufficiency) may predict sustained depressive symptoms in those who are already depressed. These findings have significant implications for public health.

How do ethnicity and deprivation impact on life expectancy at birth in people with serious mental illness? Observational study in the UK

Jayati Das-Munshi et al.

Summary: Regardless of ethnicity, individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) experience significantly reduced life expectancy at birth compared to the general population, with men diagnosed with schizophrenia-spectrum and bipolar disorders facing a loss of 14.5 years, and women 13.2 years. This trend is similar for people with depression as well, indicating that life expectancy for SMI patients is lower than the general population residing in the most deprived areas in England.

COVID-19 mortality in the UK Biobank cohort: revisiting and evaluating risk factors

Joshua Elliott et al.

Summary: Using data from the UK Biobank cohort, this study investigated factors associated with COVID-19 mortality and found that age, male sex, Black ethnicity, healthcare worker status, smoking, certain comorbidities, and oral steroid use were independently associated with increased risk of COVID-19 death. The study also highlighted the potential contributions of income, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, cystatin C, and oral steroid use to the risk of COVID-19 mortality.

Genetic and clinical characteristics of treatment-resistant depression using primary care records in two UK cohorts

Chiara Fabbri et al.

Summary: Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a major contributor to the disability caused by major depressive disorder (MDD). This study demonstrated that MDD and TRD can be reliably defined using primary care records and provides the first large scale population assessment of the genetic, clinical and demographic characteristics of TRD.

All-cause and cause-specific mortality in people with mental disorders and intellectual disabilities, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: cohort study

Jayati Das-Munshi et al.

Summary: The study reveals the impact of COVID-19 on mortality rates of individuals with mental disorders and intellectual disabilities, showing that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the mortality rates of these patients further increased, with significant differences in SMRs among different psychiatric conditions, while similar risks were observed across ethnic groups.

Investigating Pleiotropy Between Depression and Autoimmune Diseases Using the UK Biobank

Kylie P. Glanville et al.

Summary: The study found a higher prevalence of depression in individuals with autoimmune diseases and vice versa, indicating a comorbidity between the two conditions. Polygenic risk score analyses provided some evidence for shared genetic factors contributing to this comorbidity, but the overall genetic architecture only explains a small proportion of the increased risk across traits.
