Solvent-free green fabrication of PVDF hollow fiber MF membranes with controlled pore structure via melt-spinning and stretching

Researchers commonly use electrospinning to develop PVDF nanofibers-based sensors, with spinning distance found to have the most significant impact on the percentage of beta-phase. Other important parameters affecting the beta-phase percentage include the electric field, drum speed, and solution flow rate. By optimizing these parameters and developing sensors on a flexible substrate, the study achieved the highest voltage output from sensors made with 1 hour of electrospinning. This systematic study can be applied to optimize nanofiber properties in any electrospinning set-up.

Experimental and theoretical studies on the formation of pure β-phase polymorphs during fabrication of polyvinylidene fluoride membranes by cyclic carbonate solvents

Summary: The use of green solvents for polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane fabrication was investigated in this study. Membranes fabricated in ethylene carbonate (EC) or propylene carbonate (PC) yielded exclusively the beta-phase product, while butylene carbonate (BC) led to a mixture of alpha and beta phase material. The PVDF membrane formed in EC exhibited the highest porosity and pure water permeability, showing promising results in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) for permeate flux and salt rejection. These findings suggest that large-scale production of piezoelectric PVDF membranes using green solvents is feasible.
