Optoelectrical analysis of TCO plus Silicon oxide double layers at the front and rear side of silicon heterojunction solar cells

Alexandros Cruz et al.

Summary: Silicon heterojunction technology shows promising potential for solar cells, but the current loss related to the front and rear contacts remains a limiting factor. By using dielectric layers to reduce the thickness of the transparent conductive oxide (TCO), parasitic absorption and material consumption can be diminished, but resistive losses also increase. Experimental bifacial cells with 20 nm TCO perform similarly to reference cells with 75 nm, and a screen printing metallization method enhances the current density without compromising resistive losses. This approach has resulted in a certified champion cell with an efficiency of 24.6%.

Summary: This study demonstrates the implementation of trimethyl boron doped p-type a-Si:H film as a hole transport layer contacting with indium-free aluminum doped zinc oxide in silicon heterojunction solar cells. The research shows that moderate doping concentration can help achieve low defect density and high doping level in the film, resulting in improved cell performance with low contact resistivity.

Raw material needs for the large-scale deployment of photovoltaics - Effects of innovation-driven roadmaps on material constraints until 2050

Estelle Gervais et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the metal and metalloid requirements for next-generation photovoltaics on a global scale until 2050, highlighting the shortage of gallium, indium, arsenic, bismuth, and selenium. Strategies to mitigate risks, such as resource efficiency and alternative production processes, are discussed. Concerns are raised over the sustainability of multijunction solar cell technologies due to potential material shortages, calling for stronger integration of sustainable material use considerations in technological development.

Transparent-conductive-oxide-free front contacts for high-efficiency silicon heterojunction solar cells

Shenghao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, TCO layers are substituted by utilizing lateral conduction of c-Si absorber in SHJ solar cells, achieving a TCO-free design with low series resistivity and good fill factor. Suppressing metal diffusion into a-Si:H layer through ozone treatment at the a-Si:H/metal interface improves passivation quality without increasing contact resistivity, enabling SHJ solar cells with TCO-free front contacts to achieve efficiencies exceeding 22%.

Advanced method for electrical characterization of carrier-selective passivating contacts using transfer-length-method measurements under variable illumination

L. -L. Senaud et al.

Summary: Carrier-selective passivating contacts are crucial for practical efficiency limits in c-Si solar cells, but transport losses affecting carrier collection still need to be addressed. A novel concept of "shell" and characterization methodology using TLM measurements was proposed to study charge-carrier transport in SHJ n-type contact stacks. The impact of illumination on contact resistivity was highlighted, underscoring the importance of measuring under maximum power point conditions for accurate characterization of solar cell transport losses.

Room-temperature sputtered tungsten-doped indium oxide for improved current in silicon heterojunction solar cells

Can Han et al.

Summary: This study optimized the tungsten-doped indium oxide film deposited by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at room temperature to improve the performance of silicon heterojunction solar cells. Optical simulation indicated a promising optical response in IWO, which was confirmed in fabricated devices. By adding an additional magnesium fluoride layer on the device, the IWO-based SHJ device achieved a higher efficiency compared to the ITO counterpart, mainly due to its current gain.

Low-Resistance Hole Contact Stacks for Interdigitated Rear-Contact Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells

Philipp Wagner et al.

Summary: The study focuses on achieving low contact resistivity for p-contacts in silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells by using direct aluminum metallization instead of classic n-type transparent conductive oxides. The results show that carefully annealing the aluminum/amorphous silicon contact at moderate temperatures leads to a specific contact resistivity that is significantly lower than its silver/ITO counterpart. The study also highlights the efficiency of hole tunnel-recombination between aluminum and amorphous silicon, leading to improved device performance in terms of fill factor and power conversion efficiency.

Summary: To significantly impact climate change, the annual production of photovoltaic (PV) modules must increase dramatically to around 3 terawatts (TW) by 2030. However, existing and future commercial PV cell technologies face sustainable manufacturing capacity limitations due to scarce metals, necessitating significant material consumption reductions for sustainable multi-TW scale manufacturing.
