Design of Covid-19 testing queues

Luyi Yang et al.

Summary: This paper uses queueing-game-theoretic models to study how testing facilities can incentivize individuals to get tested by setting scheduling and pricing policies, with the goal of identifying the most cases of infection. The findings show that offering free testing attracts the most testees but may not catch the most cases, and charging a testing fee may surprisingly increase case detection. Prioritizing symptomatic individuals over asymptomatic ones may result in more undetected cases compared to FIFO testing. The optimal policy is to make testing free, but partially prioritize individuals with symptoms when testing demand is high and switch to partially prioritize asymptomatic individuals when testing demand is moderately low.

Curbing the COVID-19 pandemic with facility-based isolation of mild cases: a mathematical modeling study

Simiao Chen et al.

Summary: The study suggests that moderate capacity facility-based isolation with 5 beds per 10000 population in the USA could reduce new infections and deaths compared to self-isolation at home, while high capacity facility-based isolation with increased testing could achieve even greater reductions. However, delays in implementation would significantly diminish the impact of facility-based isolation, and the effective capacity and impact of facility-based isolation varied by epidemic stage in different regions.

Association of tiered restrictions and a second lockdown with COVID-19 deaths and hospital admissions in England: a modelling study

Nicholas G. Davies et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of tiered restrictions and lockdown measures on SARS-CoV-2 transmission, hospital admissions, and deaths from COVID-19. Lockdown measures were found to be more effective in reducing cumulative deaths compared to less stringent restrictions. It was projected that a lockdown policy similar to Wales' would effectively reduce pressure on the health service and suppress deaths over the winter period in England.

Why Perfect Tests May Not Be Worth Waiting For: Information as a Commodity

K. Drakopoulos et al.

Summary: This paper examines how the accuracy of tests affects the demand for information products among heterogeneous agents, and how test accuracy can be used as a rationing device for limited supply. It is found that, when test availability is low and tests cannot be allocated in a targeted manner, moderately good tests may outperform perfect tests in terms of social outcome.

Optimal Targeted Lockdowns in a Multigroup SIR Model

Daron Acemoglu et al.

Summary: The study found that targeted lockdown policies based on risk/age groups significantly outperform uniform lockdown policies in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Implementing stricter protective measures, such as lockdowns, on the more vulnerable elderly group can lead to most of the gains.

A Simple Planning Problem for COVID-19 Lock-down, Testing, and Tracing

Fernando Alvarez et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the intensity of the optimal lock-down for controlling COVID-19 fatalities is determined by the fatality rate gradient and the availability of antibody testing, which can yield economic welfare gains. Additionally, test-tracing-quarantine measures are shown to be complementary to lock-down policies.
