Summary: This study investigated the ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of waste polyethylene with activated carbon. The operating parameters and AC/WPE mass ratio had complex interactions on the oil and gas yields. A hybrid method of artificial neural network coupled with genetic algorithm was used to establish mathematical expressions and optimize the conditions for the highest oil yield. The experimental values were in good agreement with the predicted values, and the oil composition consisted of alkenes, naphthenes, alkanes, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Summary: The study investigates the self-ignition and combustion characteristics of coal dust under inclination conditions using a two-step parallel oxidation reaction mechanism, providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of coal dust fires. Experimental results show that the self-ignition and combustion process of coal dust can be divided into five stages and the inclination angle affects the minimum ignition temperature, with coal dust deposited under the ceiling being more easily ignited.

Summary: Smouldering treatment of sewage sludge, particularly when combined with sand or woodchips, offers an efficient method for phosphorus recapture with low release of potentially toxic elements in the resulting ash. Direct recovery of phosphorus can be achieved by acidic extraction, accounting for around 42% of retained phosphorus, or by emissions capture for up to 78% to 99% when co-smouldering with woodchips.

Summary: This study reviewed the research findings of thermochemical conversion technologies of mixed waste plastics (MWP) into transport engine fuel. The study found that pyrolysis of MWP produces high oil yields and good fuel properties. However, certain types of plastics, such as polyethylene terephthalate and polyvinyl chloride, are not suitable for pyrolysis due to the production of harmful gases. Engine testing with MWP oil showed delayed combustion and higher emissions. Further research is needed to address the challenges and issues for industrial and commercial applications.

Summary: This study investigates the classical aspects of smoldering front propagation in an annular reactor, introducing new methodologies for calculating front velocity and determining combustion front regime. The experiments support the argument that annular reactor design is currently the best for recovering combustion heat. Different methods for calculating front velocity were used, revealing a gasification regime where the front structure showed downstream heat convection of the oxidation reaction resulting in increased bed temperature.

Summary: By using simulations and microstructure testing, the forward propagation of smoldering fires in different rank coals with varying particle sizes was investigated. It was found that as the particle size decreased, the pores > 10 nm, specific surface area, and pore volume increased, resulting in enhanced smoldering capability of coal. The critical minimum air-supply, activation energy, and maximum smoldering temperatures varied with particle size and coal type. Moisture content was identified as the dominant factor for smoldering spread during a certain stage.

Summary: This study applies a reaction model optimization workflow to calibrate seven different ISC reaction models and simulate the combustion of two heavy oil samples based on experimental data. The results indicate that reaction models with fewer reactions or parameters can equally or even better describe heavy oil combustion, and the number of stages of pseudocomponent decomposition is the most important aspect of a reaction model.

Summary: This study investigated the co-pyrolysis of waste polyethylene (WPE) and polystyrene (WPS) for oil production under different operating conditions. A hybrid model of artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) was adopted to predict and optimize the co-pyrolysis oil yield and components. The results showed that high temperature, low polystyrene content, and low carrier gas flow rate were favorable for higher oil yield. The findings can guide the industrial process of waste plastic pyrolysis and the ANN-GA coupled with central-composite design can be used for regulating different target products under complex conditions.

Summary: This study quantifies the propagation rates of smoldering combustion and the blow-off limits under external airflows up to 50 m/s. It finds that smoldering propagation rate first increases to its maximum value, then remains stable, and finally slightly decreases until blow-off. The blow-off airflow velocity of smoldering combustion is around ten times larger than that of flaming combustion, and it decreases as the fuel diameter or density increases.
