Remediation of ammonia-stripped sanitary landfill leachate by integrated heterogeneous Fenton process and aerobic biological methods

Gamal K. Hassan et al.

Summary: The use of heterogeneous Fenton process combined with biological and physical treatment has been evaluated for the treatment of landfill leachate. The results show that the best sequence is biological treatment followed by heterogeneous Fenton process, which achieved the highest removal rates for organic compounds and ammonia.

Pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation and biological denitrification for effluent of biological landfill leachate treatment system

Siying Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that pyrite-activated persulfate oxidation efficiently removed organic matter from the effluent of a biological landfill leachate treatment system, and subsequent denitrification was also successful. With the optimal parameters, a COD removal efficiency of about 45% and a nitrate removal rate of around 108 mg L-1 d(-1) were achieved.

Effective partial denitrification of biological effluent of landfill leachate for Anammox process: Start-up, influencing factors and stable operation

Yilin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the start-up, influencing factors, and stable operation of partial denitrification for treating biological effluent from landfill leachate. The research found a suitable ratio of nitrate/ammonium for downstream Anammox process, and highlighted the importance of carbon sources, COD/NO3--N ratio, and salinity in partial denitrification.

The development in biological wastewater treatment over the last 50 years

Jiri Wanner

Summary: The paper summarizes the development of activated sludge process over the past 50 years, highlighting the shift from BOD removal to combined removal of organic pollution, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The development required a combination of chemical engineering approaches, accurate microbial identification techniques, and a shift towards safe reuse of wastewater due to increasing water stress worldwide.

Evaluation of Partial Nitritation/Anammox Process for Reduction of Pollutants from Sanitary Landfill Leachate

Gamal K. Hassan et al.

Summary: A proposed combined process of partial nitritation followed by anammox was used to treat high-pollution municipal landfill leachate, showing potential advantages in increasing treatment capacity. Studies revealed ammonia reduction up to 85% and nitrite reduction almost 99% in the anammox reactor, with Broccadia species responsible for the anammox process.
