Lithium plating on the anode for lithium-ion batteries during long-term low temperature cycling

Guangxu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the evolution of lithium plating in commercial lithium-ion batteries during long-term low temperature cycling. The results show that capacity degradation and internal resistance increase decelerate with a turning point around 450 cycles, with the loss of cyclable lithium being the main reason behind battery degradation. Post-mortem analysis reveals the thickness and morphology change of plated lithium, as well as the composition of solid electrolyte interface film.

Impact of low temperature and charge profile on the aging of lithium-ion battery: Non-invasive and post-mortem analysis

Weixiong Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the low temperature performance of lithium-ion batteries under various charge rates, finding that there is a considerable reversible capacity loss and internal resistance increase with the increase in charge rate. The main degradation modes were identified as loss of lithium inventory and loss of active material, with lithium plating regarded as the main aging mechanism.

Thermal runaway characteristics and failure criticality of massive ternary Li-ion battery piles in low-pressure storage and transport

Yanhui Liu et al.

Summary: A recent study investigated the effects of pressure and cell number on thermal runaway of Lithium-ion batteries, demonstrating that lowering the pressure can weaken the intensity of exothermic reactions. Additionally, the overall fire risk increases with higher pressure and larger battery-pile size.

Thermal runaway mechanism of lithium-ion battery with LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode materials

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This paper illustrates the thermal runaway mechanism of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 based lithium-ion batteries and proves that the reaction between the cathode and flammable electrolyte is the trigger of thermal runaway accidents. Experimental results demonstrate that the vigorous exothermic reaction is initiated by the liberated oxygen species.

Characterization on thermal runaway of commercial 18650 lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles: A review

Yih-Shing Duh et al.

Summary: This review summarizes and characterizes the calorimetric results of commercial 18650 lithium-ion batteries under thermal runaway, ranking their hazard potential as LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 > LiCoO2 > LiNixMnyCozO2 > LiMn2O4 >> LiFePO4. The LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 battery displays the worst case scenario under thermal runaway, while LiFePO4 battery is showed to be relatively safer. The differential characteristics of thermal runaway among different batteries are discussed in detail, providing insight for future studies and designs of safer batteries.
