Climate change in the coastal ocean: shifts in pelagic productivity and regionally diverging dynamics of coastal ecosystems

Sergio A. Navarrete et al.

Summary: Climate change is transforming the coastal ecosystems in the Southeastern Pacific through altering primary productivity. Increased larval arrival and rapid growth of benthic adults are observed in the region of higher productivity, while decreased productivity leads to slower declines in population. The effects of climate change on productivity warn of potential collapse in poleward stocks.

Influence of Eastern Upwelling systems on marine heatwaves occurrence

R. Varela et al.

Summary: This study is the first to focus on the occurrence of MHWs in the Eastern Boundary Upwelling systems (EBUs). The research found that Benguela, Canary, Chile, Peru, and California EBUs show lower trends in the number of MHW days near the coast compared to the adjacent ocean unaffected by upwelling events, indicating that upwelling may moderate the occurrence of MHWs.

Alteration of coastal productivity and artisanal fisheries interact to affect a marine food web

M. Isidora Avila-Thieme et al.

Summary: Top-down and bottom-up forces play important roles in determining ecosystem function and dynamics. Fisheries and climate change were identified as key global change drivers affecting food web dynamics. Fisheries have a significant impact on non-harvested species compared to harvested species.

Recent Changes in the Low-Level Jet along the Subtropical West Coast of South America

Catalina Aguirre et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown significant changes in the number and duration of coastal low-level jet (CLLJ) events off central Chile, with an increase in CLLJ events in the whole study area during winter and a decrease observed at lower latitudes during summer. The changes are attributed to alterations in central pressures and the frequency of extratropical, migratory anticyclones reaching the coast of South America.
