Binding mechanism and binding free energy of amino acids and citrate to hydroxyapatite surfaces as a function of crystallographic facet, pH, and electrolytes

Samuel E. Hoff et al.

Summary: The study compared the binding mechanisms and free energies of amino acids and citrate ions on hydroxyapatite surfaces at different pH values, revealing that charged residues have higher affinity. The findings can provide valuable insights for designing peptides, proteins, and drug molecules for modifying bone and teeth-related materials and controlling apatite mineralization.

Involvement of prenucleation clusters in calcium phosphate mineralization of collagen

Yu-xuan Ma et al.

Summary: The study examined the role of thermodynamically-stable prenucleation clusters (PNCs) and polymer-induced liquid precursors (PILPs) in the intrafibrillar mineralization of collagen. It was found that unstable PNCs could lead to intrafibrillar mineralization of single collagen fibrils when anionic/cationic polyelectrolytes were used. However, mineralization of collagen sponges with PNCs alone was ineffective, constrained by competition from extrafibrillar mineral deposition.

A N-Terminus Domain Determines Amelogenin's Stability to Guide the Development of Mouse Enamel Matrix

Yulei Huang et al.

Summary: Amelogenins are key proteins in enamel development, forming supramolecular structures that guide mineral deposition. A subdomain of N-terminal amelogenin controls self-assembly into a temporary protein scaffold, resisting rapid proteolysis during enamel development in an animal model. Understanding the fibrous scaffold's role in guiding hydroxyapatite growth sheds light on protein-mediated enamel bioengineering.
