Sulfate Import in Salmonella Typhimurium Impacts Bacterial Aggregation and the Respiratory Burst in Human Neutrophils

T. L. Westerman et al.

Summary: During enteric salmonellosis, neutrophil-generated reactive oxygen species alter the gut microenvironment, favoring survival of Salmonella Typhimurium. Through screening of defined mutant libraries of Salmonella Typhimurium, it was found that certain gene deletion mutants lead to a weakened respiratory burst. The study demonstrates that Salmonella Typhimurium employs various mechanisms to limit the magnitude of the neutrophil respiratory burst.

Inhibitors of bacterial H2S biogenesis targeting antibiotic resistance and tolerance

Konstantin Shatalin et al.

Summary: The emergence of resistance to clinical antibiotics has prompted the development of a new antimicrobial strategy targeting the bacterial hydrogen sulfide (H2S) defense system. Inhibitors of the bacterial cystathionine g-lyase (CSE) have been found to enhance the effectiveness of bactericidal antibiotics against major human pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These inhibitors also disrupt bacterial tolerance, reduce biofilm formation, and decrease the number of persister bacteria surviving antibiotic treatment.

YeiE Regulates Motility and Gut Colonization in Salmonella enterica Serotype Typhimurium

T. L. Westerman et al.

Summary: Regulation of flagellum biosynthesis is a hierarchical process tightly controlled by the LysR transcriptional regulator YeiE, which promotes virulence by enhancing cell motility. The Delta yeiE mutant lacks motility and shows reduced expression of flagellar class 2 and 3 genes, leading to defective gut colonization. YeiE acts as a control point for flagellar gene expression, adding a new layer to the regulatory cascade for enteric pathogen fitness.
