Advancements in multi-scale filler reinforced epoxy nanocomposites for improved impact strength: A review

Tarun Nanda et al.

Summary: This review discusses the use of epoxy-clay fiber reinforced plastics in various applications and the efforts to improve impact strength through research and development. Researchers have focused on various clay morphologies, compatibilization of reinforcing fillers, and techniques to enhance the compatibility of fillers for better mechanical properties. Recent developments in processing epoxy GFRPs with clay nano-fillers and thermoplastic-fibers/elastomeric-particles as micro-fillers have shown promise in enhancing impact strength and tensile properties. The future research scope includes further improvements in the compatibility of polymeric/elastomeric fillers for multi-scale filler reinforced epoxy GFRPs.

Experimental study on the effect of hygrothermal environments combined with the sustained mechanical loads on the strength of composite rings

Roham Rafiee et al.

Summary: The study shows that the performance of composite pipes is significantly affected by hygrothermal conditions, with different moisture uptake behaviors observed at low and high temperatures. The type of moisture absorption behavior was not significantly influenced by the applied preload. Applying hygrothermal and strain corrosion conditions resulted in a decrease in Hoop Tensile Strength of the samples, as seen in SEM images showing decreased bonding between fibers and matrix.

Development and Validation of a Testing Procedure for Determining Tensile Strength of Bent GFRP Reinforcing Bars

Khaled Mohamed et al.

Summary: The study developed and standardized testing procedures for determining the tensile strength of bent GFRP bars, with results showing a 4%-20% difference in strength compared to standard procedures. The new testing method is suitable for various shapes of GFRP bars and has been adopted into Canadian's specification for fiber-reinforced polymers.
