Episodic ferruginous conditions associated with submarine volcanism led to the deposition of a Late Carboniferous iron formation

Xiuqing Yang et al.

Summary: Iron formations (IFs) are iron-rich chemical sediments widespread in the Precambrian, providing key evidence of anoxic and ferruginous marine conditions throughout Earth's history. The Shikebutai IF in northwest China's Western Tianshan region is predominantly composed of hematite, jasper, and siderite, with an authigenic origin indicated by its chemical composition dominated by Fe2O3 and SiO2.

Tracing seawater- and terrestrial-sourced REE signatures in detritally contaminated, diagenetically altered carbonate rocks

Qiaolin Gong et al.

Summary: The study analyzed Cambrian ooids and microbial structures in South China and found that diagenetic alterations and detrital contamination can affect the reliability of their REY signatures. Early marine cements showed seawater-like REY patterns, while detrital fractions enriched in heavy REEs were identified. The LA technique can be used for paleoceanographic reconstruction based on less altered components and provenance analysis of fine-grained particles.

Depositional and Environmental Constraints on the Late Neoarchean Dagushan Deposit (Anshan-Benxi Area, North China Craton): An Algoma-Type Banded Iron Formation

Xiaoxue Tong et al.

Summary: The Dagushan banded iron formation in the late Neoarchean period is a typical Algoma-type BIF located in the northeast of the North China craton. Despite undergoing metamorphism, it retains evidence of different depositional facies, with a transition from oxide to silicate to carbonate facies BIF evident in a northward direction. The distinct distribution of mineralogical facies corresponds well with the depositional environment of the BIF, with carbonate facies forming in near-shore environments and oxide and silicate facies forming in deeper waters.

A 35-million-year record of seawater stable Sr isotopes reveals a fluctuating global carbon cycle

Adina Paytan et al.

Summary: Changes in the concentration and isotopic composition of major constituents in seawater can provide insights into past changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate. The stable strontium isotope record presented in this study reveals a complex pattern related to changes in the mineralogy and burial location of biogenic carbonates over time.

Summary: The study reports a Granular Iron Formation (GIF) in the North China Craton, with a depositional age constrained at 2.44-2.32 Ga. The presence of hematite in the GIF indicates oxygenation of shallow seawater during this period.
