Modeling of non-spherical particle flows: Movement and orientation behavior

Miguel Angel Romero-Valle et al.

Summary: The rapid advancement of functional material systems with non-spherical particles has created a demand for technical tools to support process design and understanding of such systems. A novel approach for calculating drag forces and torques for non-spherical particles in liquid media has been proposed in this study.

Shear-induced glass-to-crystal transition in anisotropic clay-like suspensions

Vincent Labalette et al.

Summary: A new numerical framework based on Stokesian dynamics was used to study the shear-induced glass-to-crystal transition in suspensions of clay-like anisotropically charged platelets. The study revealed different structures obtained in quiescent conditions and after shear, showing a transition from liquid phase to crystal phase. The research suggests that the shear-induced transient, nematic, disordered state is an initial step that may be common for other suspensions of strongly anisotropic colloids.
