Poa pratensis ECERIFERUM1 (PpCER1) is involved in wax alkane biosynthesis and plant drought tolerance

Dangjun Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the gene PpCER1-2 and found that its expression could be induced by drought and salt stresses, enhancing plant drought tolerance. Overexpression of PpCER1-2 resulted in increased alkane biosynthesis while decreasing primary alcohols and total wax content, leading to reduced cuticle permeability and improved drought tolerance in plants. The findings suggest that PpCER1-2 plays a crucial role in wax alkane biosynthesis and has potential in enhancing plant resilience to drought.

BoCER1 is essential for the synthesis of cuticular wax in cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata)

Wenxue Cao et al.

Summary: BoCER1 was found to be expressed in all cabbage tissues except roots, and its function in cabbage was determined using CRISPR technology. Creating wax-less cabbage through gene editing may aid in breeding brilliant green cabbage varieties.

A single SNP in Brcer1 results in wax deficiency in Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis)

Chuanhong Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a wax deficiency mutant cer1 was obtained from Chinese cabbage, with genetic analysis revealing that the phenotype was controlled by a single recessive nuclear gene. The potential causal gene was identified as BraA09g066480.3C, which encodes aldehyde decarboxylase. The study shows that SNP can be effectively used for marker-assisted selection of wax deficient Chinese cabbage, facilitating the breeding of new varieties with this desirable trait.

Genome-wide QTL analysis of tomato fruit cuticle deposition and composition

Rida Barraj Barraj et al.

Summary: Genetics of traits related to fruit cuticle deposition and composition were studied in two red-fruited tomato species. A total of 70 QTLs were identified, indicating the complex polygenic nature of cuticle traits. Additive and epistatic interactions were observed for all traits, with co-localization of QTLs for multiple traits uncovering novel genomic regions affecting cuticle changes. Cuticle density plays a crucial role in modulating thickness and strength without compromising palatability.

Chemical Composition, Crystal Morphology, and Key Gene Expression of the Cuticular Waxes of Goji (Lycium barbarum L.) Berries

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cuticular wax of six goji berry cultivars, revealing that fatty acids, alkanes, and primary alcohols are major components related to the formation of irregular lamellar crystal structures. The terpenoid compounds in goji berries' cuticular wax showed high resistance to Alternaria rot. Genes such as CER1, CER6, LACS1, MAH1, LTP4, ABC11, MYB96, and WIN1 were found to be closely related to wax synthesis in goji berries.

Origin and diversification of ECERIFERUM1 ( CER1 ) and ECERIFERUM3 ( CER3 ) genes in land plants and phylogenetic evidence that the ancestral CER1/3 gene resulted from the fusion of pre-existing domains

Komal Chaudhary et al.

Summary: CER1 and CER3 are key genes in the synthesis of alkanes in plant cuticular waxes, with origins traced back to a common ancestor in Viridiplantae through duplication of CER1/3. The evolution of these genes involved differential divergence of two distinct domains, indicating a fusion of pre-existing domains in green plants.
