Influence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes reinforced honeycomb core on vibration and damping responses of carbon fiber composite sandwich shell structures

Apichit Maneengam et al.

Summary: In this study, the vibration and damping characteristics of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) reinforced honeycomb embedded sandwich composite shell structures were investigated numerically using finite element (FE) method. The efficacy of the FE method was verified by comparing the natural frequencies assessed using ABAQUS 3D FE model. The study explored the influence of MWCNT reinforcement, support condition, and radius of curvature on the dynamic performance of honeycomb sandwich shell with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite face sheets. Additionally, the optimal ply orientations of various configurations of CFRP sandwich shells with MWCNT/GFRP honeycomb were identified using the developed FE model coupled with genetic algorithm (GA) to enhance the natural frequencies and loss factors.

Effect of projectile nose on high-velocity impact behavior of fiber metal laminates

Gholamhossein Majzoobi et al.

Summary: The ballistic performance of FML 3/2 was found to be 75.63% higher than FML 2/1, with significantly improved specific perforation energy. Despite being thicker, FML 3/2 demonstrated better resistance to impact and penetration for various types of projectile noses.

Tensile and flexural behavior of metal/CFRP hybrid laminated plates

Chenyu Zhou et al.

Summary: The study on metal/CFRP hybrid laminated plates showed that with increasing number of CFRP layers, the tensile strength increased while the tensile modulus decreased, and the bending strength increased while the bending modulus decreased. The numerical parametric study revealed that the tensile modulus and strength decreased with increasing number of 45 degrees CFRP layers.

An analytical model for the progressive failure prediction of reinforced thermoplastic pipes under axial compression

Wencheng Liu et al.

Summary: The proposed model combines homogenization method and nonlinear stiffness degradation model to accurately predict the progressive failure of RTPs under axial compression, including damage location, failure mode, damage accumulation, and ultimate compression. ABAQUS Explicit quasi-static analyses were conducted to validate the model's accuracy in predicting elastic stiffness, first ply failure, damaged stiffness, ultimate compression, and stress distributions.

The effect of superimposed ultrasonic vibration on tensile behavior of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy

Bangfu Wu et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic vibration can reduce the forming force of metallic materials, improve their deformation ability and surface quality, without permanently altering their mechanical properties. It reduces the stress required for deformation without changing the Young's modulus and strain hardening rate.
