Investigation on the Physicochemical and Mechanical Properties of Novel Alkali-treated Phaseolus vulgaris Fibers

B. Gurukarthik Babu et al.

Summary: This investigation studied the effect of NaOH treatment on PVFs. The optimal treatment time was found to be 45 min, resulting in higher cellulose content, crystallinity index, and lower hemicellulose and lignin contents in the treated fibers. The rough surface of PVFs makes them a potential reinforcement material for polymer composites.

Summary: The research focuses on using agricultural waste like Cymbopogon flexuosus plant shoot as reinforcement in biocomposites due to its abundance and eco-friendly nature. Carbonized CFPS is rich in SiO2 and hard ceramic particles, making it a feasible reinforcement option. Non-carbonized CFPS, on the other hand, has a semi-crystalline nature and can serve as a filler or substitute for silica-based inorganic fillers.

Comprehensive Characterization of Industrially Discarded Cymbopogon Flexuosus Stem Fiber Reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Composites: Effect of Fiber Length and Weight Fraction

Raja Soma Sundaram et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the use of Cymbopogon flexuosus stem fiber (CFSF) as a reinforcing material for unsaturated polyester composites, leading to enhanced mechanical properties. The optimal conditions were found to be a fiber content of up to 30 wt.% and fiber length of up to 40 mm, beyond which the properties declined. Incorporation of CFSF also improved water absorption rate and increased thermal stability of the composites.

A study on mechanical, structural, morphological, and thermal properties of raw and alkali treatedCordia dichotoma-polyestercomposite

Bandi Madhusudhan Reddy et al.

Summary: Currently, natural fibers are being widely studied and used as reinforcement materials in polymer composite due to their low density, light weight, and biodegradability. Cordia dichotoma fibers, extracted from its bark through water-retting process, show promising mechanical properties when reinforced in a polyester matrix after alkali treatment with 5% NaOH solution. FTIR spectroscopy and SEM analysis were used to identify the chemical composition changes and surface impurity removal, leading to enhanced mechanical properties in the resulting composite materials. Additional study on thermal stability was conducted using TGA to assess the degradation temperature and weight loss of both raw and alkali-treated fiber reinforced composites.
