Micro-mechanical modeling study of the influence of cure process on the interfacial cracking of Z-pinned laminates

Shengnan Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel micro-mechanical modeling approach was developed to predict the partially debonding of Z-pin reinforced composite laminates after the cure process. Numerical simulation results showed that residual stress concentration mainly occurred in the interphase, potentially resulting in interfacial cracking around the Z-pin.

Ablation and heat insulation performances of nose-shaped ZrC-C composites with gradient pore structure

Ningning Yan et al.

Summary: Nose-shaped ZrC-C composites with gradient pore structure (ZrC-CGS) were successfully prepared using ZrC skeleton as preform, showing superior ablation and heat insulation performance. Compared with ZrC-C composites with dense structure, ZrC-CGS composites have a lower mass ablation rate, higher heat resistance capacity, and lower coefficients of thermal expansion.

Tuning interlaminar fracture toughness of fine z-pin reinforced polymer composite

Min Li et al.

Summary: By implanting fine z-pins on the in-plane fibers, the interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites can be significantly improved, while maintaining high retentions of in-plane mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the carbon fiber pins play a crucial role in enhancing the composite laminate.

Comparison of laminate thickness on the low velocity impact behaviors for Z-pinned composite laminates

Binbin Liao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of laminate thickness on the low velocity impact responses of Z-pinned laminates, demonstrating that Z-pins are effective in preventing delamination, especially when impact energy exceeds a certain threshold. As laminate thickness increases, the delamination suppression is less effective for thin laminates compared to intermediate-thickness laminates, while thick laminates may experience weaker suppression effectiveness due to smaller bridging forces and slight Z-pin pull-out at the same impact energy.

Analysis and modeling of the Z-pin insertion in prepreg based on contact mechanism

Liang Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of lay-up sequence on the Z-pin insertion force in fiber-reinforced laminated composites. The research proposes two models based on different contact modes of Z-pin insertion, which accurately predict the insertion force. Experimental testing and analysis results demonstrate the importance of contact area between Z-pin and prepreg in determining the force-displacement relationship during the insertion process.
