Amphiphilic polymer co-networks: 32 years old and growing stronger - a perspective

Costas S. Patrickios et al.

Summary: APCNs are amphiphilic polymer co-networks with internal self-organization property, commonly used in silicone hydrogel soft contact lenses. They exhibit microphase-separated morphologies, translucency-to-transparency, biocompatibility, low to moderate aqueous swelling, fair mechanical strength and possible stimulus-responsiveness, with further research needed to understand and improve these materials for next-generation APCNs.

Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering Measurements on Amphiphilic Polymer Conetworks Swollen in Orthogonal Solvents

Lena Benski et al.

Summary: Amphiphilic polymer conetworks (APCNs) combine two different polymer nanophases with unique potential to separately swell one of these nanophases in a selective solvent. The structural changes induced by swelling in APCNs are strongly dependent on the topology, as observed in the study with poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) crosslinked by poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PMOx) in water and toluene solvents.
