Polymer-water interactions and damage detection in polymer matrix composites

Ogheneovo Idolor et al.

Summary: Polymer matrix composites have a tendency to absorb moisture, which either becomes bound to the polymer network or exists as free water. This study introduces a new non-destructive examination method that leverages locally-higher concentration of free water in damaged areas. Experiments demonstrate a direct correlation between the extent of local damage and higher relative levels of free water at damage sites.
