Yellow-green luminescence of four-coordinate copper(I) complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands: Synthesis, photophysical and computational studies

Yinfu Lu et al.

Summary: A series of six copper(I) complexes with benzimidazolylidene-type N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were synthesized and studied, showing tunable photophysical properties by adjusting substituents on the pyridine ring. All complexes exhibited lowest-lying metal-to-ligand absorption bands and emitted bright yellow-green light upon UV excitation, with higher emission quantum yields and microsecond-scale excited state lifetimes. The substituents on the pyridine ring were found to impact emission wavelengths, while the introduction of R-1 substituents allowed enhancement of photoluminescence quantum yield. Additional exploration of electronic properties and absorption/emission profiles was done using DFT/TDDFT methods.
