A High-Throughput Short Sequence Typing Scheme for Serratia marcescens Pure Culture and Environmental DNA

Thibault Bourdin et al.

Summary: The study introduced a high-throughput short sequence typing (HiSST) method for the opportunistic human pathogen Serratia marcescens, which was successfully used in an epidemiological survey in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The method proved to be efficient in distinguishing strains and exploring the diversity profile of nonculturable S. marcescens, offering new possibilities for tracking opportunistic pathogens and relating their distribution pattern with environmental features. Adaptation of this method to other pathogens is expected to improve knowledge regarding their ecology and help in outbreak mitigation strategies.
