A novel pathogenicity determinant hijacks maize catalase 1 to enhance viral multiplication and infection

Zhiyuan Jiao et al.

Summary: The P31 protein of Maize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) is crucial for viral accumulation and symptom development, interacting with maize catalases to inhibit expression of salicylic acid-responsive genes and induce systemic chlorosis and necrosis. Silencing of maize catalases facilitates MCMV RNA and coat protein accumulation, highlighting the important role of P31 in counteracting host defense mechanisms during infection.

Discovery and Validation of a Recessively Inherited Major-Effect QTL Conferring Resistance to Maize Lethal Necrosis (MLN) Disease

Ann Murithi et al.

Summary: Maize lethal necrosis (MLN) is a viral disease that has a devastating effect on maize production. This study identified KS23-5 and KS23-6 as potential donors of MLN resistance genes and discovered a major-effect QTL (qMLN06_157) on chromosome 6 associated with MLN resistance. The consistent and recessive nature of this QTL across populations suggests its potential use in marker-assisted breeding to improve MLN resistance in eastern Africa.

Auxin Plays Multiple Roles during Plant-Pathogen Interactions

Barbara N. Kunkel et al.

Summary: Auxin, a plant hormone, is involved in various aspects of plant growth and development, as well as in plant-microbe interactions, particularly in promoting disease in plant-pathogen interactions. Recent studies have shown that the most well-studied form of auxin, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), can modulate host signaling and physiology to increase susceptibility, while also impacting the pathogen directly to enhance virulence.
