Delayed impact of natural climate solutions

Zhangcai Qin et al.

Summary: To limit global temperature rise, scientists have suggested utilizing the potential of protecting and managing natural systems for climate change mitigation. However, actual mitigation efforts may be significantly delayed due to the time needed for technology deployment and natural carbon gain, potentially undermining the goals of the Paris Agreement.Launching actions now and learning from past experiences are crucial in achieving climate mitigation and sustainable development goals.

Distribution, sources, and decomposition of soil organic matter along a salinity gradient in estuarine wetlands characterized by C:N ratio, δ13C-δ15N, and lignin biomarker

Shaopan Xia et al.

Summary: Although the critical role of coastal wetlands in mitigating climate change, sea-level rise, and salinity increase is increasingly recognized, mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in estuarine wetlands remain poorly understood. New research has shed light on the sources, decomposition, and storage of SOC in estuarine wetlands, revealing the dominant mechanisms of kinetic isotope fractionation during microbial degradation and preferential substrate utilization. Multiple indicators, including C:N ratios, delta C-13, delta N-15, and lignin biomarkers, are essential in deciphering the decomposition and source of sedimentary organic matter along the river-estuary-ocean continuum.

Spartina alterniflora invasion controls organic carbon stocks in coastal marsh and mangrove soils across tropics and subtropics

Shaopan Xia et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the invasion of smooth cordgrass affects the storage and stability of soil organic carbon in wetlands, leading to changes in SOC storage. The impact of smooth cordgrass invasion varies in different types of wetlands, with mangrove wetlands being most severely affected and requiring efforts to restore native vegetation.

Summary: Seasonal and interannual variations in global wetland area play a significant role in global methane emissions. However, discrepancies in current global wetland maps lead to substantial uncertainties in estimating wetland methane emissions. The WAD2M dataset developed in this study provides a more accurate foundation for large-scale wetland CH4 modeling.
