Transport coefficients for magnetic-field evolution in inviscid magnetohydrodynamics

J. R. Davies et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of magnetized resistivity and electrothermal tensors on magnetic field generation, diffusion, and advection. It finds that errors in fits by Epperlein and Haines, as well as Braginskii, can lead to physically incorrect results for cross field advection, particularly at small Hall parameters. New fits for the cross field advection terms are proposed to address these issues.

Time-resolved turbulent dynamo in a laser plasma

Archie F. A. Bott et al.

Summary: Understanding magnetic field generation and amplification in turbulent plasma is crucial for explaining observations of magnetic fields in the universe. This study validates a theoretical framework for the origin and sustainment of these fields, and reports an experiment on laboratory plasma dynamo with Pm & 1. By characterizing plasma evolution and measuring various properties, it is shown that plasma turbulence from strong shear can generate fields more efficiently than previously thought, potentially explaining large-scale fields in astrophysical systems.

High-throughput injection-acceleration of electron bunches from a linear accelerator to a laser wakefield accelerator

Yipeng Wu et al.

Summary: Plasma-based accelerators driven by intense lasers or charged particle beams can accelerate electrons or positrons with high gradients, but require stability, quality, controllable polarization, and reproducibility. External injection from a conventional linear accelerator into a laser wakefield accelerator and subsequent acceleration without significant charge loss has been demonstrated. Proper shaping and matching of the beam into the plasma structure can achieve this with modest degradation in beam quality, paving the way for a high-energy, hybrid conventional-plasma-based accelerator.

Kinetic simulation study of magnetized collisionless shock formation on a terawatt laser system

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Perpendicular, magnetized, collisionless shocks in hydrogen and neon plasmas were studied through 2D particle-in-cell simulations, revealing the main dissipation mechanism to be the modified two-stream instability (MTSI), and suitable parameters for upcoming experiments were determined based on this.
