Stability and tip streaming of a surfactant-loaded drop in an extensional flow. Influence of surface viscosity

M. A. Herrada et al.

Summary: In this study, we numerically investigate the nonlinear stationary states of a droplet covered with an insoluble surfactant in a uniaxial extensional flow. We find that the presence of surfactant significantly reduces the stability interval of capillary numbers and has little effect on the droplet deformation and stability in relation to droplet viscosity. Tip streaming only occurs in the presence of surfactants, and the critical eigenmode for tip streaming is similar to the central pinching mode for a clean interface. Viscous surface stress decreases the damping rate of the dominant mode, and shear viscous surface stress alters the nature of tip streaming in the supercritical regime.

Impact of surface viscosity on the stability of a droplet translating through a stagnant fluid

Natasha Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of interfacial viscosity on the stability and deformation of droplets translating through a quiescent fluid. Results show that surface shear viscosity inhibits tail/cavity growth at the droplet's rear end, while surface dilatational viscosity increases this growth. Both types of surface viscosity delay pinch off occurrence. Additionally, the study examines the combined influence of surface viscosity and surfactant transport on droplet stability.

Effect of surfactant on the settling of a drop towards a wall

Sayali N. Jadhav et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of surfactants on drop settling dynamics, finding that surfactants can alter the settling speed and deformation of the drops, with the most significant effects near the solid wall.

Study on the rheology of a dilute emulsion of surfactant-covered droplets using the level set and closest point methods

P. H. N. Pimenta et al.

Summary: This work investigates the effects of surfactant elasticity, coverage factor, and Peclet number on droplet shape and emulsion rheology. The study shows that surfactant elasticity and coverage factor have a more intense impact on droplet shape, while Peclet number directly affects the bulk viscosity of the emulsion, demonstrating a compensatory mechanism in viscosity changes with coverage factor.

How surfactants influence the drop size in sprays from flat fan and hollow cone nozzles

R. Sijs et al.

Summary: Spraying surfactant solutions results in smaller droplets compared to pure water, but the breakup process is similar. By rescaling with mean droplet size and adjusting parameters, the droplet size distributions of surfactant solutions can be described using predictions for simple liquids.

Thermocapillary effects on viscoelastic drops suspended in axisymmetric pressure driven flows

Malay Vyas et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the dynamics and deformation of a viscoelastic drop in another immiscible viscoelastic medium under externally imposed pressure and temperature gradients. The viscoelastic properties of the inner phase strongly influence the migration velocity and interfacial deformation of the drop, with the shape changing from prolate to oblate as the viscoelastic stresses become significant.

Thermocapillary effects on eccentric compound drops in Poiseuille flows

Sayali N. Jadhav et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the dynamics of a neutrally buoyant, eccentric compound drop suspended in Poiseuille flow under an external temperature gradient, revealing that the temperature gradient can affect drop velocity, leading to deformation of the inner drop and possibly achieving equilibrium with the same velocity.

The role of surfactants on the shape of confined droplets moving in circular microchannel

D. Ferraro et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of surfactants on the curvature of confined droplets flowing in circular channels, both with and without surfactants. It finds that the front curvature scales with the capillary number, while the rear meniscus curvature strongly depends on surfactant concentration and dispersion.
