Development of coupled two phase flow and geomechanics model to predict stress evolution in unconventional reservoirs with complex fracture geometry

Anusarn Sangnimnuan et al.

Summary: Understanding stress changes associated with reservoir depletion is crucial for development of unconventional reservoirs. In this study, a coupled fluid flow and geomechanics model was upgraded with Embedding Discrete Fracture Model (EDFM) using the open-source platform OpenFOAM for wider applications and validated through various tests.

Pore-resolved volume-of-fluid simulations of two-phase flow in porous media: Pore-scale flow mechanisms and regime map

Aniket S. Ambekar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of wettability and interfacial tension on two-phase flow through porous media for oil recovery. It is found that the pore filling mechanism and oil recovery are influenced by the change in wettability at different Capillary numbers (Ca) values.

A novel fluid-solid coupling model for the oil-water flow in the natural fractured reservoirs

Dongxu Zhang et al.

Summary: A discrete fracture model was proposed in this study to simulate rock deformation and two-phase flow behaviors in NFR, with sensitivity analysis conducted on key parameters. Results showed that the fluid-solid coupling effect weakened with production time, decreased with increased matrix permeability, fracture connectivity controlled the water flood front, and water injection intensity affected natural fracture opening deformation and well productivity.

Natural fracture opening preservation and reactivation in deep sandstones of the Kuqa foreland thrust belt, Tarim Basin

Zhao Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that reservoir performance in deep to ultra-deep sandstones is influenced by critical stress acting on existing fractures, with quartz bridges and shear reactivation playing a significant role in the persistence of open fractures. Additionally, open fracture development may be related to folding and fault reactivation.

High-pressure methane adsorption behavior on deep shales: Experiments and modeling

Weijun Shen et al.

Summary: The study found that methane adsorption on deep shales is influenced by various factors, including total organic carbon content, temperature, clay minerals, and moisture content. The TOC content is positively correlated with methane adsorption capacity, while the clay mineral content is negatively correlated. Increasing temperature decreases methane adsorption capacity, but the trend may reverse at certain pressures. The presence of moisture significantly reduces methane adsorption on deep shales, with the reduction in adsorption capacity decreasing as pressure increases.

Geological conditions, reservoir evolution and favorable exploration directions of marine ultra-deep oil and gas in China

Li Jianzhong et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the structural background, petroleum geological conditions, and typical regional oil and gas reservoirs in marine ultra-deep oil and gas regions in China. It reveals the evolution processes and key controlling factors of accumulation in these reservoirs, which are mainly distributed in the Sichuan, Tarim, and Ordos cratonic basins. The dominant carbonate rocks in the ultra-deep reservoirs are controlled by high-energy sedimentary environments and later-stage corrosion and fractures. The accumulation of oil and gas in these regions is influenced by both static and dynamic geological elements.
