A thermodynamically consistent fractional visco-elasto-plastic model with memory-dependent damage for anomalous materials

Jorge Suzuki et al.

Summary: This study developed a thermodynamically consistent, fractional visco-elasto-plastic model coupled with damage, utilizing Scott-Blair rheological elements. Through fractional damage energy release rates and memory-dependent Lemaitre-type damage, the research highlighted the crucial role of fractional orders in visco-elasto-plasticity for damage evolution. The study also introduced a first-order semi-implicit fractional return-mapping algorithm and a finite-difference discretization method to reduce computational complexity.

Data-driven fractional subgrid-scale modeling for scalar turbulence: A nonlocal LES approach

Ali Akhavan-Safaei et al.

Summary: Filtering the passive scalar transport equation in large-eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent transport leads to the closure term for unresolved scalar flux. Understanding and respecting the statistical features of subgrid-scale (SGS) flux is crucial for robustness and predictability of LES. This study proposes a statistical model for SGS scalar flux behavior, taking into account nonlocal statistics and incorporating power-law behavior through a filtered Boltzmann transport equation (FBTE). Through data-driven approach, an optimal fractional-order model for SGS scalar flux is inferred and shows promising performance in reproducing the probability distribution function of SGS dissipation compared to true high-fidelity data.

Two-point stress-strain-rate correlation structure and non-local eddy viscosity in turbulent flows

Patricio Clark Di Leoni et al.

Summary: By analyzing the Karman-Howarth equation for filtered-velocity fields in turbulent flows, it is shown that the two-point correlation between the filtered strain-rate and subfilter stress tensors is central in the evolution of filtered-velocity correlation functions. Statistical a priori tests based on two-point correlations enable rigorous and physically meaningful studies of turbulence models. It is found that using fractional gradient orders rather than classical gradients in eddy-viscosity models can lead to stronger non-local correlations.

A fractional PDE model for turbulent velocity fields near solid walls

Brendan Keith et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a class of turbulence models based on fractional partial differential equations with stochastic loads, where solutions are incompressible velocity fields with Gaussian distributions. Interaction between turbulence and solid walls is achieved through various boundary conditions, allowing flexibility in simulating near-wall statistics. Two simple physical applications are emphasized, including the reproduction of fully developed shear-free and uniform shear boundary layer turbulence, with the former validated using experimental data. Additionally, the paper discusses the generation of inhomogeneous synthetic turbulence inlet boundary conditions, inspired by contemporary numerical wind tunnel simulations, as well as calibration of model parameters and efficient numerical methods.

A Data-Driven Memory-Dependent Modeling Framework for Anomalous Rheology: Application to Urinary Bladder Tissue

Jorge L. Suzuki et al.

Summary: The study introduces a data-driven fractional modeling framework to analyze the behavior of complex materials, with a focus on bio-tissues such as the porcine urinary bladder. Anomalous relaxation characteristics, including nonlinear behavior and power-law-like patterns for short/long times, were identified through multi-step relaxation experiments. Fractional Maxwell model and fractional quasi-linear viscoelastic model were employed to capture the material behavior under small and large strains, demonstrating the framework's effectiveness in describing multiple stages of bladder functionality.
