Fundamental physics with ESPRESSO: Precise limit on variations in the fine-structure constant towards the bright quasar HE0515-4414

Michael T. Murphy et al.

Summary: This study presents a new constraint on the relative variations in the fine-structure constant α using high-resolution spectroscopy with the ESO VLT. The observations of the quasar HE 0515-4414 reveal narrow absorption components, allowing for a more robust analysis. The resulting measurement of Δα/α with parts-per-million (ppm) precision provides valuable insights into cosmological variations.

A new era of fine structure constant measurements at high redshift

Dinko Milakovic et al.

Summary: New observations of the quasar HE0515-4414 were made using the HARPS spectrograph on the ESO 3.6m telescope with the assistance of a Laser Frequency Comb (LFC). Advanced techniques such as wavelength calibration using LFC and ThAr methods, spectral modeling with Artificial Intelligence, and assigning additional model parameters for individual absorption components were employed. The results show overall consistency with no variation in the measurements.

Cosmological impact of redshift drift measurements

J. Esteves et al.

Summary: The redshift drift can be used as a model-independent probe of fundamental cosmology, but can also be used to constrain model parameters when combined with a specific fiducial model. Different methods for measuring redshift drift have varying levels of effectiveness in constraining different cosmological parameters such as matter density and dark energy equation of state. Trade-offs exist between optimizing for accurate redshift drift measurements and using those measurements to constrain cosmological parameters, which must be carefully considered in the design and construction of next-generation instruments.

Improved Limits for Violations of Local Position Invariance from Atomic Clock Comparisons

R. Lange et al.

Summary: A study compared two optical clocks based on Yb-171+ and measured the frequency ratio of their electric quadrupole and electric octupole transitions, finding improved accuracy. The study also analyzed potential violations of physical laws and improved limits on the temporal variations of fundamental constants and the proton-to-electron mass ratio.

Primordial nucleosynthesis with varying fundamental constants Solutions to the lithium problem and the deuterium discrepancy

M. Deal et al.

Summary: The success of primordial nucleosynthesis has been limited by the long-standing lithium problem. A self-consistent perturbative analysis is used to explore the problem and its possible solutions in the context of the latest observations and theoretical modeling. The research concludes that the lithium problem most likely has an astrophysical solution, while the Deuterium discrepancy provides a possible indication of new physics.
