Correlated noise in brain magnetic resonance elastography

Ariel J. Hannum et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impact of signal noise in magnetic resonance elastography on mechanical property estimates. Results showed that physiological and vibration noise had a greater effect on property estimation than image noise, and they were spatially correlated.

A heterogenous, time harmonic, nearly incompressible transverse isotropic finite element brain simulation platform for MR elastography

Matthew McGarry et al.

Summary: In this study, a numerical implementation of a NITI FE model for MR elastography of fibrous soft tissue was described, with heterogeneity and anisotropy accounted for. Simulation results showed that the NLI algorithm performed well in simple isotropic cases, while LDI exhibited significant artifacts due to violation of local homogeneity assumptions. Additionally, isotropic NLI inversion of anisotropic data produced undesirable wavefield-dependent mechanical property maps.

Aging brain mechanics: Progress and promise of magnetic resonance elastography

Lucy Hiscox et al.

Summary: Neuroimaging techniques like magnetic resonance elastography play a crucial role in characterizing healthy brain aging and early detection of neurodegenerative diseases. The viscoelasticity of brain tissue provides a unique biophysical signature of neuroanatomy, reflecting the composition and organization of tissue microstructure. Advancements in brain MRE technology offer valuable insights into brain aging, neurodegeneration, and structure-function relationships, with potential to serve as an imaging biomarker for neurodegenerative conditions.

Calibration of a Heterogeneous Brain Model Using a Subject-Specific Inverse Finite Element Approach

J. Sebastian Giudice et al.

Summary: The study developed the CAB-20MSym template model and successfully improved the material heterogeneity and biofidelity. By utilizing new experimental data and techniques, the material parameters of the brain model were successfully calibrated, which can serve as an anatomically accurate model for further investigations of traumatic brain injury biomechanics.

Inversion-recovery MR elastography of the human brain for improved stiffness quantification near fluid-solid boundaries

Ledia Lilaj et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method IR-MRE was proposed to improve the quantification of stiffness in brain surface areas. The results showed that IR-MRE can effectively suppress CSF signal, improve the accuracy of stiffness values, and provide clearer depiction of tissue anatomy near brain surfaces.

Quantitative effects of off-resonance related distortion on brain mechanical property estimation with magnetic resonance elastography

Grace McIlvain et al.

Summary: Off-resonance related geometric distortion can impact quantitative MRI techniques like MRE, affecting the estimated mechanical properties. Different k-space trajectories and correction methods can influence the accuracy of the measurements, with traditional distortion correction pipelines being effective in reducing stiffness errors, but with limitations in cases of very large distortion.
