Silicon 3D Microdosimeters for Advanced Quality Assurance in Particle Therapy

Linh T. Tran et al.

Summary: The Centre for Medical Radiation Physics introduced the concept of Silicon On Insulator (SOI) microdosimeters with 3-Dimensional (3D) cylindrical sensitive volumes (SVs) mimicking the dimensions of cells in an array. Several designs of high-definition 3D SVs fabricated using 3D MEMS technology were implemented. The SVs were used to evaluate the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of heavy ions and protons delivered by different particle therapy centers.

Roadmap: proton therapy physics and biology

Harald Paganetti et al.

Summary: Proton radiation therapy has become a mainstream treatment option for cancer, with almost 200 000 patients treated worldwide. Despite its advanced dose shaping capabilities, there are still challenges to address, including uncertainties, room for improvement in dose delivery, and biological effect differences compared to photon radiation. Additionally, the economic aspect of proton therapy, with its higher costs compared to conventional treatments, is also an area of active research.

Development and validation of proton track-structure model applicable to arbitrary materials

Tatsuhiko Ogawa et al.

Summary: A novel transport algorithm has been developed for proton track-structure calculations in arbitrary materials. Unlike traditional algorithms, this new method does not rely on the dielectric function of the target material but instead uses total stopping power and single-differential cross sections for secondary electron production. Benchmarking against experimental data showed the accuracy and applicability of this model for various materials.

Update of the particle irradiation data ensemble (PIDE) for cell survival

Thomas Friedrich et al.

Summary: The particle irradiation data ensemble (PIDE) is a large database of cell survival data after exposure to ion beams and photon reference radiation. It contains over 1100 pairs of photon and ion dose response curves, providing raw data and LQ model parameters for analysis of radiation dose response properties. The database demonstrates the variability among experiments and discusses the limitations and capabilities for analyzing low and high LET radiation responses based on multiple experiments.

A Mechanistic DNA Repair and Survival Model (Medras): Applications to Intrinsic Radiosensitivity, Relative Biological Effectiveness and Dose-Rate

Stephen Joseph McMahon et al.

Summary: Variations in intrinsic radiosensitivity of different cells to ionizing radiation play a significant role in response to radiotherapy. The Medras model provides a mechanistic framework to model different radiation responses and predict individual responses, by simulating repair of radiation-induced DNA damage and predicting a range of biological endpoints. Validation of the model against various exposure types, including different radiation qualities and dose-rates, supports its potential in informing mechanistic predictions of radiation sensitivity and supporting developments in treatment personalization.

Physics and biomedical challenges of cancer therapy with accelerated heavy ions

Marco Durante et al.

Summary: Carbon ions represent a promising combination of physical and biological advantages for radiotherapy, with clinical results showing potential breakthroughs. However, the cost-effectiveness and comparison to proton therapy centers continue to be a topic of debate in the clinical community. Research towards smaller, cheaper machines with more effective beam delivery is seen as necessary to make particle therapy more affordable and fully exploit the clinical benefits.
