Attributing Terrestrial Water Storage Variations across China to Changes in Groundwater and Human Water Use

Summary: This study investigated the attribution of terrestrial water storage (TWS) variations to changes in groundwater and human water use across China. Groundwater storage (GWS) played a vital role in TWS trends, with a significant correlation with in situ groundwater table depth. The findings revealed the impact of irrigation consumption on TWS depletion and the correlation between TWS change and factors such as precipitation and evapotranspiration.

Divergent Causes of Terrestrial Water Storage Decline Between Drylands and Humid Regions Globally

Summary: Climate variability, climate change, and direct human activities have been identified as the three main driving factors contributing to declines in terrestrial water storage. In humid regions, warming-induced glacier loss and direct human activities are the primary causes of water storage loss, while in non-glacierized humid areas, climate variability leads to regional water gains that counteract synchronous decreases in water storage. Drylands experience enduring and widespread water storage losses due to direct human activities, particularly unsustainable groundwater abstraction.

Global terrestrial water storage and drought severity under climate change

Summary: Using ensemble hydrological simulations, it is found that climate change could reduce TWS in many regions, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. The decline in TWS translates to an increase in future droughts, highlighting the need for climate change mitigation and improved water resource management and adaptation. By the late twenty-first century, the global land area and population in extreme-to-exceptional TWS drought could more than double.
