Coherently Coupled Mixtures of Ultracold Atomic Gases

Alessio Recati et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the relevant features of binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of coherent coupling at zero temperature. The nature of the quantum phases, such as paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and supersolid phases, are discussed in detail. The behavior of elementary excitations and the novel features caused by the spin-like degree of freedom are also discussed. The article further focuses on topological excitations (solitons, vortices) and superfluid properties, and highlights open questions for further theoretical and experimental investigations.

Quantum-torque-induced breaking of magnetic interfaces in ultracold gases

A. Farolfi et al.

Summary: The study successfully achieved effects similar to magnetic junctions using a coherently coupled mixture of ultracold bosonic gases, observing the formation of magnetic interfaces and waves. These results establish ultracold gases as a platform for studying far-from-equilibrium spin dynamics in regimes not easily accessible in solid-state systems.

Faraday waves in strongly interacting superfluids

Diego Hernandez-Rajkov et al.

Summary: By modulating the radial trap frequency and utilizing a Feshbach resonance, Faraday waves were observed in a cigar-shaped Fermi superfluid of Li-6. The study characterized the phenomenon by extracting parameters such as the speed of sound, showing a reduction in visibility of the Faraday pattern near unitarity. Additionally, the effects of finite sample size were discussed, and a novel model based on Floquet theory was introduced for stability analysis, revealing the emergence of Faraday waves as unstable solutions to a Mathieu-like equation.

Particle creation in the spin modes of a dynamically oscillating two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

Salvatore Butera et al.

Summary: The research investigates the parametric amplification of zero-point fluctuations in the spin modes of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. Predictions show that quantum excitations of spin modes are weak and featureless in the case of expanding condensates, while clear and promising signs of particle creation are expected in oscillating condensates under suitable resonance conditions.

Manipulation of an elongated internal Josephson junction of bosonic atoms

A. Farolfi et al.

Summary: In this study, we experimentally characterized a spatially extended Josephson junction using a coherently coupled two-spin-component Bose-Einstein condensate. The trapped cloud allowed for the freezing of transverse spin excitations. Our results suggest consistency with a simple local density approximation of spin hydrodynamics, the so-called Bose-Josephson junction equations, across different manipulation protocols. Additionally, we identified a method to generate states with a well-defined uniform magnetization.
