Computational micromechanics of porous brittle solids

Lars Blatny et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure mechanics of porous brittle solids using a stochastic and numerical microstructure method, revealing the elasticity and failure characteristics at different porosities. The study finds that failure onset is described well through second order work, and stress at failure follows a power law similar to the elastic modulus, with plastic deformation governed by an associative plastic flow rule. Additionally, large deformation simulations show a transition in the mode of deformation localization.

Undulating compression and multistage relaxation in a granular column consisting of dust particles or glass beads

Felipe Pacheco-Vazquez et al.

Summary: The compression-relaxation tests on dust particles and glass beads in a cylindrical cell revealed that the compression force increases nonlinearly with displacement and exhibits different vibration patterns for different particles. The relaxation process shows exponential decay and logarithmic dependence. Compression mechanics are governed by distinct forms of empirical equations for dust particles and glass beads, leading to unique characteristics of compression force growth and vibration patterns.
