Turbulence at the edge of continuum

M. A. Gallis et al.

Summary: Noncontinuum molecular-level fluctuations have been observed to affect the turbulent energy cascade in high-Mach-number flows, breaking the symmetries of initial conditions and leading to different but statistically similar routes from initial nonturbulent flow to long-time turbulent flow. Despite similar energy-decay histories, molecular-level effects introduce variability in the turbulent flow evolution process.
