The structural basis of far-red light absorbance by allophycocyanins

Nathan Soulier et al.

Summary: Phycobilisomes (PBS) are the major light-harvesting antenna in cyanobacteria, composed of colorless linkers and pigment-binding phycobiliproteins, capable of absorbing orange-red and far-red light. Paralogous forms of AP have been identified recently, which can absorb far-red light and are used in two types of photoacclimation. Through site-specific mutagenesis, it was discovered that the protein environment surrounding the PCB on the AP alpha subunit is responsible for the far-red light absorbance of FRL-APs.

OrpR is a σ54-dependent activator using an iron-sulfur cluster for redox sensing in Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough

Anouchka Fievet et al.

Summary: This study unveils the regulatory mechanism of OrpR in Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough (DvH), indicating the pivotal role of OrpR in the transcription of two orp operons, especially under anaerobic conditions. The findings also suggest that OrpR senses redox potential variations via a redox-sensitive [4Fe-4S](2+) cluster in the sensory PAS domain.
