The Genomic Selfing Syndrome Accompanies the Evolutionary Breakdown of Heterostyly

Xin-Jia Wang et al.

Summary: The transition from outcrossing to selfing leads to reduced genetic diversity and lower rates of adaptive evolution in selfing populations compared to outcrossing populations. The reduced efficacy of purifying selection and purging of deleterious mutations support the theoretical expectations of the genomic selfing syndrome. Self-fertilization plays a major role in molecular evolutionary processes with genomic signatures of selfing evident in both old and young homostylous populations.

Evolution of seed mass associated with mating systems in multiple plant families

Hirofumi Tateyama et al.

Summary: The evolution of selfing in flowering plants often leads to changes in genomic, physiological and morphological properties, known as the selfing syndrome. A mathematical model predicted smaller seed mass in selfing species compared to outcrossing congeners, due to reduced conflict between maternally and paternally derived alleles. The study found that selfing plants tend to have smaller seeds compared to outcrossing plants, although the effect of mating systems on seed mass variation is relatively small.

The population genomics of adaptive loss of function

J. Grey Monroe et al.

Summary: Recent discoveries have challenged the early belief that loss-of-function alleles are always harmful, revealing widespread gene content variation in population genomic diversity surveys. Studying adaptive loss-of-function alleles faces challenges in detecting selection and causal relationships with phenotypes due to allelic heterogeneity, but technical advances in population genomic tools and genotype-phenotype methods show promise in overcoming these limitations. The challenges of studying adaptive loss of function underscore the importance of classifying genomic variation based on the functional concept of an allele from classical population genetics.

Early evolution of reproductive isolation: A case of weak inbreeder/strong outbreeder leads to an intraspecific hybridization barrier in Arabidopsis lyrata

Omer Iltas et al.

Summary: Reproductive strategies in plants, particularly transitions from outcrossing to selfing, can result in parental conflict and affect endosperm development, leading to reproductive isolation between species. The divergence in paternal genomes between selfers and outcrossers can contribute to extensive hybrid seed lethality. Other factors besides sex-specific interests may also play a role in postzygotic reproductive isolation.

Pollen-Pistil Interactions as Reproductive Barriers

Amanda K. Broz et al.

Summary: Pollen-pistil interactions act as important prezygotic reproductive barriers in plants, playing a critical role in mate selection by rejecting heterospecific pollen and interacting with self-incompatibility systems. These interactions can involve active pollen rejection systems, mechanisms linked to cell wall-modifying enzymes, and differential attraction and inhibition of sperm cell release as barriers to heterospecific pollen tubes.

A mutation in a C2H2-type zinc finger transcription factor contributed to the transition toward self-pollination in cultivated tomato

Lele Shang et al.

Summary: The degree of stigma exsertion in tomato has a significant impact on self-pollination efficiency. A novel stigma exsertion gene (SE3.1) was discovered, which plays a key role in the conversion of exserted stigmas to inserted stigmas, influencing self-fertilization rates. SE3.1, along with Style2.1, contribute to the transition from stigma exsertion to insertion during tomato domestication and improvement.
