Strengthened second law for multi-dimensional systems coupled to multiple thermodynamic reservoirs

David H. Wolpert

Summary: The second law of thermodynamics, which restricts the evolution of entropy, can be strengthened in multi-dimensional complex systems by introducing a set of constraints on the dynamics of each coordinate. This strengthened second law applies to physically separated and co-evolving subsystems, and does not require local detailed balance.

Work, Entropy Production, and Thermodynamics of Information under Protocol Constraints

Artemy Kolchinsky et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the entropy production and extractable work involved in bringing a physical system from an initial distribution to a final distribution under constraints, deriving general bounds and decomposing the nonequilibrium free energy. It also considers the thermodynamics of information in the presence of constraints, decomposing acquired information in measurements into accessible and inaccessible components to analyze the thermodynamic efficiency of different measurements. The framework is used to analyze protocols subject to various constraints and examples such as the Szilard box, the 2D Ising model, and a multiparticle flashing ratchet.
