Intensification of the steam stimulation process using bimetallic oxide catalysts of MFe2O4 (M = Cu, Co, Ni) for in-situ upgrading and recovery of heavy oil

Ameer H. AL-Rubaye et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that bimetallic catalysts based on transition metals can effectively improve the in-situ heavy oil upgrading process by reducing viscosity, increasing saturates content, improving H/C ratio, and removing sulfur and nitrogen compounds. Among the catalysts tested, CoFe2O4 shows the best performance in enhancing the quality of heavy crude oil.

In-situ microwave-assisted catalytic upgrading of heavy oil: Experimental validation and effect of catalyst pore structure on activity

Mohamed Adam et al.

Summary: In this study, a new microwave heating technique was proposed to provide the necessary heating for the catalytic upgrading of heavy oil in the THAI process. Contrary to previous assertions, it was demonstrated that heavy oil can be directly heated with microwaves to the required temperature without the need for additional microwave susceptor. Additionally, the use of commercially available HDS catalyst resulted in substantial upgrades in API points, viscosity reduction, and sulfur content reduction.

A review of in situ upgrading technology for heavy crude oil

Yibo Li et al.

Summary: With the increasing demand for oil globally, in situ upgrading technology has emerged as a potential solution for the development of heavy oil and bitumen reservoirs. Solvent-based methods face limitations due to high costs, while ISC poses challenges with complex operation and low success rates. Catalytic methods show promise for economic and environmentally friendly crude oil refinement but are hindered by high costs and complex mechanisms.

Extra-Heavy Oil Aquathermolysis Using Nickel-Based Catalyst: Some Aspects of In-Situ Transformation of Catalyst Precursor

Alexey V. Vakhin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the catalytic performance of an oil-soluble nickel-based catalyst during aquathermolysis of oil-saturated crushed cores, revealing that the catalytic upgrading at 300 degrees C led to a decrease in resins and asphaltenes content, an increase in saturated hydrocarbon content, and a significant increase in low-molecular alkanes in the saturates fraction. The results suggest that nickel tallate is a promising catalyst for in-situ upgrading of extra-heavy oil during steam injection techniques.

A Review on the Reaction Mechanism of Hydrodesulfurization and Hydrodenitrogenation in Heavy Oil Upgrading

Suleiman Sabo Bello et al.

Summary: The future of fuel supply will involve the utilization of heavy crude oils, which require initial hydrotreatment for conversion into qualified fuel oils or synthetic crude. The removal of sulfur and nitrogen compounds from heavy crude oils is a critical and challenging part of the upgrading process. However, the mechanisms of these reactions are not fully understood, requiring further research for innovative solutions.

Microstructural Investigation of Coke Deposition in Pelleted Catalyst during Downhole Catalytic Upgrading of Heavy Crude Oil Using Porosimetry and X-ray Computed Tomography

Abarasi Hart

Summary: The study showed that coke and metals deposition from heavy oil catalytic upgrading can affect the pore structure of the catalyst, leading to decreased reaction activity. Coke deposition blocks pore mouths, resulting in a reduction in surface area and pore volume of the catalyst. To mitigate this impact, the use of nano-catalysts or controlled pore size could be considered.
