Long-term field measurements of climate-induced thaw subsidence above ice wedges on hillslopes, western Arctic Canada

Christopher R. Burn et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the thickening of the active layer near the western Arctic coast of Canada has led to melting of ice wedges in flat terrain, but not easily detectable on hillslopes. The melting of ice wedges on hillslopes causes subsidence of the ground surface and the development of regional thermokarst landscapes.

Distribution, morphometry, and ice content of ice-wedge polygons in Tombstone Territorial Park, central Yukon, Canada

Roxanne Frappier et al.

Summary: The study in Tombstone Territorial Park in central Yukon investigates the distribution, morphometry, and wedge-ice content of ice-wedge polygons in mountainous permafrost region. Ice-wedge polygons occupy 2.6% of the park and mostly develop in woody sedge peat, glaciofluvial, and alluvial deposits along low-gradient hillslopes <= 1 degrees. The size and trough angles of the polygons are statistically similar, but they display different development stages based on vegetation type, surface wetness, and spatial pattern.
