Masking Adherence in K-12 Schools and SARS-CoV-2 Secondary Transmission

Summary: This study describes the approaches taken by two school districts to promote in-school masking and assesses the impact on secondary transmission. The results show that masking surveillance interventions are effective at ensuring appropriate mask use in schools, and schools with high adherence to masking have low rates of secondary transmission.

Secondary Transmission of COVID-19 in K-12 Schools: Findings From 2 States

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of distancing practices on the secondary transmission of COVID-19 and the degree of sports-associated secondary transmission in schools. The results showed that with universal masking, in-person education was associated with low rates of secondary transmission, even with less stringent distancing and bus practices. However, additional mitigation may be necessary due to the rates of sports-associated secondary transmission.

Community SARS-CoV-2 Surge and Within-School Transmission

Summary: The study conducted in 13 North Carolina school districts during the winter surge of SARS-CoV-2 found that with adherence to basic mitigation strategies, within-school transmission of the virus can be interrupted even during a surge of community infections. Most within-school transmissions, particularly in high schools, were linked to school-sponsored sports activities. Despite a slight increase in school-acquired cases during the surge, the within-school transmission rates remained constant.
