Meta-Analysis of Lung Ultrasound Scores for Early Prediction of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Lucilla Pezza et al.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of lung ultrasound scores (LUS) for predicting bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants, it was found that LUS have good diagnostic accuracy in early prediction of BPD. The diagnostic accuracy of LUS is similar to its extended version, suggesting that the simpler score should be used.

Point-of-care lung ultrasound in neonatology: classification into descriptive and functional applications

Francesco Raimondi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the application of lung ultrasound in neonatology, including descriptive and functional uses. The proposed SAFE protocol for emergency functional LUS in critical neonates is highlighted, with potential future development linked to quantitative evaluation and computer-aided diagnostic techniques. Opportunities for teaching LUS and expanding the research network are also briefly presented.

The Role of Lung Ultrasound as an Early Diagnostic Tool for Need of Surfactant Therapy in Preterm Infants with Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Summary: This study found that LUS score accurately predicts the severity of RDS, the need for surfactant therapy, and CPAP failure in preterm infants. The routine use of LUS can reduce the frequency of CXRs in neonatal intensive care units.

Early assessment of lung aeration using an ultrasound score as a biomarker of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia: a prospective observational study

Ignacio Oulego-Erroz et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the predictive value of a lung ultrasound (LUS) score in the development of moderate-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (sBPD). The results showed that the LUS score on the 7th day of life could predict the development of sBPD effectively.

Lung ultrasound features predict admission to the neonatal intensive care unit in infants with transient neonatal tachypnoea or respiratory distress syndrome born by caesarean section

Antonio Poerio et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the reliability of lung ultrasound in predicting the need for admission to the NICU in infants born by caesarean section. The results showed that the 3P-LUS examination performed 30 minutes after birth is a reliable tool to identify those term and late preterm infants born by CS who will require NICU admission.

Modified lung ultrasound score predicts ventilation requirements in neonatal respiratory distress syndrome

Piotr Szymanski et al.

Summary: The study found that post-birth lung ultrasound scoring can predict the need for respiratory support on day 3, and scores of posterior pulmonary fields play a significant role in the overall LUS score.

The Predictive Value of Lung Ultrasound Scores in Developing Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia A Prospective Multicenter Diagnostic Accuracy Study

Summary: This study showed that the LUS score has moderate diagnostic accuracy in predicting moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Scanning posterior lung fields slightly improved diagnostic accuracy only at the 14th day of life. Adding gestational age and sex can enhance the diagnostic accuracy of the LUS scores.

Lung Ultrasound Score Progress in Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Francesco Raimondi et al.

Summary: The lung ultrasound score in preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome is gestational age dependent and significantly correlated with oxygenation status. It can predict bronchopulmonary dysplasia and is a useful, noninvasive tool to monitor respiratory status in this population.

Lung ultrasound predicts the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia: a prospective observational diagnostic accuracy study

Xiaolei Liu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the predictive ability of lung ultrasound (LU) in the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. The 12-region and 10-region LU scoring protocols were found to be superior to the 6-region protocol in predicting BPD. LU was able to predict the development of BPD from the 9th to 15th days of life, with the earliest prediction time being the 6th day when combined with clinical variables.

Summary: Lung ultrasound score (LUS) demonstrates high accuracy in predicting the need for surfactant administration regardless of gestational age (GA) in preterm neonates. The combination of LUS and oxygen saturation to FIO2 ratio shows the highest predictive power for surfactant need.

Lung Ultrasound for Prediction of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in Extreme Preterm Neonates: A Prospective Diagnostic Cohort Study

Adel Mohamed et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the diagnostic and predictive ability of lung ultrasound at 3 time points in the first 2 weeks after birth for predicting bronchopulmonary dysplasia among infants <29 weeks of gestational age. Lung ultrasound scores were significantly higher in infants diagnosed with BPD compared with those without BPD at all scan time points, with high sensitivity and specificity. The AUROC for lung ultrasound scores at the 3 time points were high, indicating a strong predictive value for the diagnosis of BPD among infants of <29 weeks of gestational age in the first 2 weeks after birth.
