Summary: This study found that among children with asthma, some developed COVID-19 with most cases being mild and fewer cases being severe or critical. Patients who used inhaled bronchodilators were more likely to experience exacerbation of asthma during COVID-19, while those who used inhaled corticosteroids did not show significant differences in symptoms, disease severity, asthma exacerbation, and hospitalization compared to non-users.

Children with asthma did not have an increased risk of lower respiratory tract infections, febrile episodes, emergency visits, or hospitalizations during the pandemic compared to non-asthmatic controls, but there was an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infections. The findings suggest that environmental control and improved treatment adherence may have contributed to the improved outcomes in children with asthma during the pandemic.
