A review of retrieving pristine rare earth element signatures from carbonates

Yanyan Zhao et al.

Summary: Rare earth element and yttrium concentrations in carbonates serve as proxies for tracing geochemical processes, but may be contaminated by non-carbonate phases. This review examines the controlling factors of REY signatures, including non-carbonate contamination and post-depositional modifications. Different analytical methods and dissolution processes can help minimize these influences and retrieve accurate REY signatures for geological studies.

Ordovician palaeogeography and climate change

L. Robin M. Cocks et al.

Summary: The new palaeogeographical reconstructions show substantial global cooling during the Ordovician, which greatly affected the evolution rates of various animal groups. This period also marked the most varied and changeable climates of the whole Phanerozoic, culminating in the 'Hirnantian' ice age.

Tracing seawater- and terrestrial-sourced REE signatures in detritally contaminated, diagenetically altered carbonate rocks

Qiaolin Gong et al.

Summary: The study analyzed Cambrian ooids and microbial structures in South China and found that diagenetic alterations and detrital contamination can affect the reliability of their REY signatures. Early marine cements showed seawater-like REY patterns, while detrital fractions enriched in heavy REEs were identified. The LA technique can be used for paleoceanographic reconstruction based on less altered components and provenance analysis of fine-grained particles.

An eogenetic karst in lacustrine carbonates and its influence on reservoir development: A case study of the Eocene Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, East China

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study describes an eogenetic karst formed in a saline lacustrine setting in the upper 4th member of the Shahejie Formation (Es4(s)), Dongying Depression, China. The karstification occurred over approximately 2 million years due to tectonic uplift, resulting in pervasive macroporosity development and the formation of caves filled with sediment. The dissolution effects were influenced by primary lithofacies, with boundstone and grainstone intervals potentially serving as favorable petroleum reservoirs.

Heterogeneous redox evolution of the Meso-Neoproterozoic ocean: Insights from eastern China

Yu Zou et al.

Summary: The study of redox-sensitive elements (RSE) compositions in marine sedimentary archives in eastern China during the Meso-Neoproterozoic period reveals enriched RSE elements in oxidized shallow conditions, indicating potentially enhanced oxygen levels and fluctuating palaeoredox structures. The findings suggest that pulsed oxic conditions may have facilitated biological innovations.

Petrogenesis of the Eocene lacustrine evaporites in the western Qaidam Basin: Implications for regional tectonic and climate changes

Ying Xiong et al.

Summary: Evaporites in the western Qaidam Basin in China during the Eocene period provide important information on paleoclimate and hydrochemistry. The study identified three types of evaporites and high-frequency superimposed sequences, indicating progressive lake salinization and early diagenesis. It is suggested that the transition of evaporitic associations was influenced by global cooling and mountain building activities.

Modeling of groundwater flow and transport in coastal karst aquifers

Neven Kresic et al.

Summary: Numerical modeling of karst water systems is a challenge due to vastly different flow regimes in the solution channels and the porous medium, but recent developments with unstructured grid models, such as MODFLOW-USG, have enabled robust simulation by providing various optional turbulent flow formulations, solute transport capability, and density-dependent flow simulation options. These enhancements eliminate the need for surrogate modeling approaches in karst, offering solutions to common problems faced by groundwater professionals in coastal karst areas.
