Sex- and Gender-Related Differences in Common Functional Gastroenterologic Disorders

Susrutha Puthanmadhom Narayanan et al.

Summary: Functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome, are common in the United States, affecting about one in four individuals, with a higher prevalence in women. Sex-based differences in prevalence, symptom severity, and comorbid conditions are observed, suggesting biological disturbances and environmental factors may play a role in the pathophysiology. More research is needed to understand the contribution of sex and gender to the response to treatments for these conditions.

Transitional changes in gastrointestinal transit and rectal sensitivity from active to recovery of inflammation in a rodent model of colitis

Yan Chen et al.

Summary: In patients with ulcerative colitis, inflammation affects colonic motility and rectal sensitivity. During active inflammation, colon transit accelerates and rectal compliance is unaffected, but rectal hypersensitivity is noted. Plasma acetylcholine decreases, while nerve growth factor increases during and after inflammation.
