The study found significant associations between family functioning and social support with child internalizing and externalizing problems, with varying results depending on the rating perspective. Interaction effects of family functioning and social support on child psychopathology were significant, highlighting the importance of family functioning and social support as potential targets for interventions, which should be confirmed in future longitudinal studies.

Adaptive Behavior as an Alternative Outcome to Intelligence Quotient in Studies of Children at Risk: A Study of Preschool-Aged Children in Flint, MI, USA

Summary: This study compared social and environmental correlates of adaptive behavior vs. IQ in preschoolers exposed to the Flint water crisis. Findings showed a significant association between adaptive behavior and maternal nurturance practices, while IQ was associated with maternal education level. Results suggest implications for the use of adaptive behavior as an outcome measure in children at increased risk for neurodevelopmental problems.

Social Determinants of Health: the Impact of Racism on Early Childhood Mental Health

Summary: Recent research has shown that racism has negative impacts on the mental health and socioemotional development of young children, with lasting consequences into adolescence and adulthood. Racism also affects parenting practices and the mental health of mothers/caregivers. While more studies are needed, racism is recognized as a significant social determinant that adversely affects infant and early childhood socioemotional and behavioral development.

Neurodevelopmental profiles of preschool-age children in Flint, Michigan: a latent profile analysis

Summary: The study found that preschoolers who experienced the Flint water crisis exhibited diverse patterns of neurodevelopmental outcomes, with half of the children showing relative weakness in cognitive and behavioral domains, one-third of children functioning within the normal range in all areas, and 15.9% of children showing relative strengths in executive function and behavior. Child sex and maternal IQ were significant predictors of profile membership.
