Historical development of FINCH from the beginning to single-shot 3D confocal imaging beyond optical resolution [Invited]

Gary Brooker et al.

Summary: This article presents a chronicle of the 15-year development of Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH), from its initial description to its current state as a 3D microscopic imaging technique that can achieve optical resolution beyond the Rayleigh limit. The article describes the path from the original demonstration of FINCH to its current use in perfect imaging of multicolor fluorescent biological specimens and reference test patterns using fluorescence or reflected light imaging.

Compressive propagation with coherence

Ryoichi Horisaki et al.

Summary: In this paper, wave propagation models of spatially partially coherent light are presented to reduce the computational load of forward and back propagations in inverse problems. By approximating partially coherent light as random or plane wavefronts passing through spatial filters, the number of coherent propagations can be reduced, making it applicable in optical control and sensing.

Deep-learning-based bright-field image generation from a single hologram using an unpaired dataset

Daniel Terbe et al.

Summary: In this study, an unpaired neural network training technique, CycleGAN, was adopted to generate bright-field microscope-like images from hologram reconstructions. The results show that the proposed method is applicable in cases where constructing paired datasets is cumbersome or not feasible, providing comparable results to paired training. Despite lower metric scores, the CycleGAN training results in sharper and more realistic object reconstructions compared to the baseline paired setting.
