Summary: The unique ability of metamaterials to confine energy at deep subwavelength scales opens up opportunities for the development of efficient sensing technologies at terahertz frequencies, with graphene metamaterials offering a broadside coupling mechanism for miniaturized and highly sensitive THz thin film sensors. The record high refractive index sensitivity of around 2.8 THz/RIU demonstrates the practicality of broadside coupling in graphene metamaterials, supported by numerical analysis using Lorentz oscillator based coupled mode theory.
