LIBS investigation of metals suitable for plasma-facing components: Characteristics and comparison of picosecond and nanosecond regimes

Alicia Marin Roldan et al.

Summary: In this study, the picosecond and nanosecond time-resolved LIBS spectra of tungsten and molybdenum at atmospheric pressure were analyzed, revealing lower plasma temperature and density in the picosecond regime, resulting in lower ablation rates and narrower spectral lines compared to the nanosecond regime.

Absorption of a nanosecond laser pulse by a picosecond laser-induced preformed aluminum plasma

Aurelien Favre et al.

Summary: The LIBS method has shown reliability and robustness in determining the multi-elemental composition of samples, but certain conditions may hinder satisfactory results. By using a double pulse configuration, it is possible to increase electron temperature and density, leading to better signal-to-noise ratio and lower limit of detection.

Summary: This study introduces two setups with different laser pulse properties and excitation geometries for post-mortem plasma-facing component analyses. Compared to single pulse, double pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy shows enhancement factors and changes in spectral line shapes.

Calibration-free analysis of a tungsten-based target for diagnostics of relevant fusion materials comparing picosecond and nanosecond LIBS

Alicia Marin Roldan et al.

Summary: The study of elemental analysis of plasma-facing components is crucial for understanding material erosion, deposition, and fuel retention. This work reports the quantitative ps- and ns-CF LIBS analysis of W-based model material (WCu), demonstrating successful detection and quantification of W and Cu spectral lines using different laser pulses. The selection of suitable laser pulses allows for more efficient surface ablation and better depth resolution.
