Experimental-numerical study of laser-shock-peening-induced retardation of fatigue crack propagation in Ti-17 titanium alloy

Rujian Sun et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that residual stresses induced by laser shock peening play a significant role in inhibiting fatigue crack propagation, with significant retardation observed under high residual stresses, small peening gap distances, and lower externally applied loads. This is mainly attributed to crack closure, as opposed to other microstructural influences.

Improving fatigue life of 7N01 Al alloy weld by surface spinning strengthening

Dongqiqiong Wang et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to improve the surface microstructure and mechanical properties of 7N01 Al alloy welded joints by surface spinning strengthening (3S), so as to improve the fatigue life at certain stress. Results show that the microhardness of the welded joint increases significantly due to the introduction of some nanoprecipitates and dislocations, and the strength and elongation increase simultaneously. Fracture surface analysis shows that the crack initiation site shifts from surface to subsurface after 3S treatment, which helps eliminate surface defects and improve surface strength.
