The Gulf Stream and Kuroshio Current are synchronized

Tsubasa Kohyama et al.

Summary: Observations and model simulations show that sea surface temperatures along the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio Current synchronize at decadal time scales, associated with meridional migrations of the atmospheric jet stream. Changes in ocean currents due to jet shifts lead to temperature synchronicity, indicating that BCS is an interbasin air-sea coupled mode. Air temperature patterns similar to BCS have been repeatedly observed, demonstrating the presence of this synchronization phenomenon.

Variability and upward trend in the kinetic energy of western boundary currents over the last century: impacts from barystatic and dynamic sea level change

Tal Ezer et al.

Summary: The study identified gravitational, rotational and deformational effects as responsible for multidecadal variations in sea level, while changes related to wind patterns and oceanic kinetic energy were mainly seen at interannual and decadal scales. Comparisons in western boundary currents regions showed a general upward trend in oceanic kinetic energy, while trends in wind kinetic energy varied widely across different regions.

Data-driven reconstruction reveals large-scale ocean circulation control on coastal sea level

Sonke Dangendorf et al.

Summary: Research on historical and projected coastal sea-level change reveals that ocean dynamics, including density fluctuations, have a significant impact. By analyzing global tide-gauge records, a reconstruction of coastal sea-level budget over nine regions is possible, indicating that ocean circulation has been a dominant factor in sea-level variability since 1960.

Western boundary circulation and coastal sea-level variability in Northern Hemisphere oceans

Samuel Tiefolo Diabate et al.

Summary: The northwest basins of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans are regions of intense western boundary currents, with inshore sea level measurements from tide gauges providing insights into past oceanic circulation. While the relationship between coastal sea level and western boundary current variability has been studied separately in each basin, a comparison between the two basins is lacking. The study demonstrates sustained agreement between inshore sea level and meridional shifts of western boundary current extensions in each basin, indicating the potential for using long-duration tide gauges as proxies for past meridional shifts.
